College Place Superintendent Position

College Place Public Schools educates a diverse population of over 1400 students from kindergarten to high school in the beautiful Walla Walla Valley in South Eastern Washington. Our community is located in a highly agricultural and historical area and boasts two esteemed universities, Whitman College and Walla Walla University, and the top-rated community college in the country, Walla Walla Community College. In 2012, the College Place voters approved a $38.5 million bond to finance capital improvements to its education facilities. This resulted in the building of a first-ever public high school, brand new elementary school, middle school remodel, transportation building, new athletic facilities and more.
The district is comprised of three schools — College Place High School, John Sager Middle School, and Davis Elementary School. Each building and every classroom is equipped with state of the art technology at every grade level. Qualities and Qualifications

The selected candidate should possess the following qualities and qualifications:
  • Successful administrative experience in a school district or educational agency
  • Strong and open leadership style with unquestionable integrity, honesty, and diplomacy
  • A passion for student achievement and placing students first in all decisions
  • An open and accessible leadership style that demonstrates the interpersonal skills necessary to build strong relationships with a diverse student body, community, and staff
  • Demonstrate the ability to deal with an ever-widening scope of issues, including diversity, emerging research findings, technology, community relations, and competition from charter non-public schools
  • Comfortable in front of small and large groups
  • Outstanding communication skills, including intentional listening
  • Focus on fostering teamwork across school and district buildings
  • Demonstrated management within an educational setting, based on sound practices and the ability to successfully deal with difficult personnel issues
  • Strong, proactive leadership in developing and maintaining a wide range of programs and resources that are essential to a small district
  • Residence within 30 minutes of College Place School District boundaries, with active engagement as a community member
  • Knowledge of state school law and school finance
  • Sound financial management skills, with the ability to effectively communicate fiscal issues to the Board, staff, and community
  • An understanding of and respect for the culture of a small school and community
  • Experience in collective bargaining and the ability to implement evaluation procedures for teachers and staff under state requirements

Full-time 260 days per year


The school board will negotiate a multi-year contract with a salary based on experience and qualifications that is competitive with districts of a similar size. Compensation will include an appropriate benefit package.

Timeline 2019

  • April 12 – Application deadline; however, the district retains the right to accept applications until the position is filled.
  • April 15 – Screening and reference checks
  • April 30 – Final interviews (Selection by the Board of Directors no later than May 3, 2019).
  • July 1 – Appointed superintendent reports
