Meet Our Content Coordinators

The Content Coordinators at ESD 123 help teachers and school districts every day. Assistance includes supporting efforts to increase teacher leaders and providing workshops in various content areas including math, science, STEM and literacy. Learn more about each of our team members below.

Meet Mary

Portrait of Mary KirbyMary Kirby serves ESD 123 as the Educator Growth and Development Coordinator. In this role, Mary serves as the Beginning Educator Support Team (BEST) lead, providing support to novice teachers in the first years of their career and the mentors who work directly with them. Mary joined the ESD team in February of 2013. In addition, she is a member of OSPI Mentor Faculty providing Mentor 101 training, OSPI Induction Coach providing coaching to BEST districts, and OSPI Mentor Round Table Faculty providing monthly workshops for teacher mentors. Mary also serves as the Teacher Principal Evaluation Program (TPEP) lead working with districts to implement a standards-based system as a tool for teacher and principal growth and evaluation.

Prior to joining the ESD, Mary worked as a high school English teacher in South Brunswick, New Jersey; Walnut Creek, CA; and Santa Rosa, CA. Having a keen interest in serving struggling readers, Mary spent time as a researcher for READ 180® at Scholastic in New York City where she observed READ 180 in classrooms around the country. Mary holds a WA teacher certification in English language arts with an endorsement in English language learners. Mary earned a master’s degree in education: curriculum and instruction in 2002, a Single Subject Teaching Certification in English with a cross cultural language and development emphasis in 1998, and a bachelor’s degree in English in 1996.

MIGRANT EDUCATION - Meet Lupe

Portrait of Lupe MotaLupe Mota serves ESD 123 as the Migrant Education Program Administrator. Lupe joined the ESD team in January of 2015 as a part of the Migrant Education Department, supporting districts who serve migrant students and families in four counties. In addition, Lupe is the Federal Program Director of the Migrant Consortium, which provides direct services to migratory children and families in four school districts. Lupe is also the ESD 123 Data Improvement Network representative out of the Office of System and School Improvement (OSSI) department of OSPI to support districts with targeted and comprehensive support needs.

As an English language learner, former migrant student, and first-generation college student, Lupe has a keen interest in serving struggling, underrepresented student populations and engaging their families to be better prepared to meet 21st century demands, especially accessing higher education. Prior to joining the ESD, she worked as a Program Supervisor in the Washington State University Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) to increase post-secondary access for students from regional school districts. Lupe earned a Master of Education in educational leadership in 2018, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting in 2010.

SCIENCE - Meet Lorianne

portrait of Lorianne DonovanLorianne Donovan serves ESD 123 as the Regional Science Coordinator. In addition, she is the SE LASER Alliance Director, which works with the region’s districts to ensure quality science instruction for all students. She joined the ESD team in September of 2019, bringing a passion for STEM education for all ESD 123.

Lorianne has 28 years of classroom teaching experience and focused the last 8 years as an elementary science teacher and STEM team member in the Finley School District. She received her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Washington University and her master’s degree from Washington State University. Lorianne is a Crystal Apple award recipient and was a state finalist for Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

MATH - Meet MikeMichael Esping portrait

Mike Esping serves ESD 123 as the Regional Math Coordinator. In addition, he supports districts in use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) to ensure quality, equitable and accessible instruction for all students. He joined the ESD team in September of 2020, bringing a focus of equitable and accessible math education for all students served in southeast Washington.

Mike has 25+ years of experience as a classroom teacher, teacher leader, school administrator and most recently, supporting early career development in the ESD 112 region (Vancouver). Mike has experience supporting growing teachers and leaders as a building principal, Washington State Danielson Framework Trainer, AWSP Principal Mentor, and OSPI Induction Coach. He developed an alternative route to certification program (ESD-U) to meeting the needs of growing shortage area teachers (SPED, ELL) in SW Washington. He received his bachelor’s degrees from Oregon State University (BS Business Administration) and Concordia University (Elementary Education) and his master’s degree from Portland State University (Educational Leadership).

LITERACY - Meet Lindsey

Portrait of Lindsey BackusLindsey Fangman serves ESD 123 as the Regional Literacy Coordinator. Lindsey joined the ESD team in August of 2018. In addition, Lindsey works closely with AVID to support both staff and teachers in several districts.

Prior to joining the ESD, Lindsey worked as a middle school language arts teacher in the Dual Language department in Pasco, WA, a fifth grade teacher in Eltopia, WA, and on the White Mountain Apache Reservation in Northern Arizona. Having a keen interest in serving struggling readers, she spent time as a Washington Core Advocate helping create resources for teachers around the country and participating in several Dual Language conferences. Lindsey holds a WA teacher certification in elementary education. She earned a master’s degree in education: reading and mathematics in 2012.
