These funds begin with the 2022-2023 school year, thanks to a Youth Cannabis & Commercial Tobacco Prevention Program (YCCTPP) Hispanic/Latinx Priority Population grant. This $231,110 five-year grant will replace ESD 123’s current YCCTPP grant, which focused on cannabis and marijuana prevention and ends June 30, 2022.

The new grant will fund educational services for Hispanic/Latinx students and their families around cannabis and tobacco prevention, including parent and youth education, English and Spanish media outreach, and distribution of locking containers to safely store cannabis products and/or medication. ESD 123 will partner with organizations affiliated with Hispanic and Latinx communities in Southeastern Washington to help youth live healthier lives.

The mission of YCCTPP is to prevent and reduce cannabis and tobacco use among youth between 12-20 years of age, support the adults who influence those youth, and reduce related health and substance use education inequities in Washington state. The program is funded by the Washington Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control.

The ESD 123 Student Support Services department is currently seeking community-based outreach programs and other organization who work with the Hispanic/Latinx population in Southeastern Washington who are interested in partnering to provide education and resources to their communities. Those interested in partnering or receiving materials for distribution may contact Monica Garcia, Marijuana & Tobacco Prevention Professional, at mgarcia@esd123.org or 509-544-5743.
