Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students' behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented by a school system with fidelity, PBIS helps to transform schools into consistent and predictable environments where students and staff feel safe and supported each day. The core principles guiding Tier 1 PBIS include the understanding that we can and should: effectively teach appropriate social emotional behavior skills to all students, intervene early before unwanted behaviors escalate, use research-based, scientifically validated interventions whenever possible, and monitor student progress. PBIS works best when it has the support and understanding from the district and embraced as a systems approach building wide.
Benefits of Implementing PBIS:
- PBIS is an evidence-based approach
- PBIS is a systems level framework that involves all stakeholders
- PBIS creates the conditions for safety and consistency in a school building
- PBIS establishes a healthy school climate and culture
- PBIS increases student engagement and instructional time
- PBIS reduces racial inequities in discipline
What we have to offer:
- ESD 123 has three Tier I PBIS trainers available to provide a comprehensive, 4-day implementation training to a whole staff, which can include a component of Function of Behavior.
- ESD 123 has one Tier II and III PBIS trainer available for consultation, readiness conversations, and coaching around Tiers II and III supports and interventions.
