Article Alert: "Cigarette Smoking Among Pregnant Women During the Perinatal Period"

The CDC released a new article in the journal, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR): "Cigarette Smoking Among Pregnant Women During the Perinatal Period: Prevalence and Health Care Provider Inquiries — Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System", United States, 2021.

Key points:

  • 3 in 5 pregnant women were asked about their smoking status at their postpartum checkup.
  • 1 in 20 women in 2021 reported smoking during pregnancy, and more than half quit during pregnancy.
  • 1 in 13 women reported smoking after delivery.
  • Almost all women were asked about smoking at prenatal visits.
  • Clinicians are encouraged to routinely discuss smoking with pregnant and postpartum patients and counsel them about resources to help them quit.

Regional Youth Summit - Be the Change!

On March 15, over 250 students and their chaperones from all over Southeast Washington attended the "Be the Change Youth Summit" at the Pasco Red Lion. The 2024 annual summit was coordinated by the Southeast Washington Regional Prevention Group, which includes ESD 123, the Walla Walla County Department of Community Health, and the Benton-Franklin Health District. Local counties represented included Asotin, Benton, Columbia, Franklin, Garfield, Walla Walla, Whitman, and Yakima.

2024 Prevention Summit Call for Nominations!

The 2024 Washington State Prevention Summit is seeking nominations for awards to be recognized at this year's summit!  Award Categories:

  • Tribal and Urban Indian prevention efforts
  • Youth leader
  • Young adult leader
  • Prevention professional, and/or community prevention supporter
  • Lifetime achievement award
  • Community coalition and/or community prevention group
  • Contributions to prevention by an organization, business, or agency
  • Early-Career Prevention Professional

The Montana Summer Institute - July 16-19, 2024, Big Sky, MT

This is a conference that can be offered both in person and virtually. Early registration cost will be $995. Virtual conference be the same date and cost will be $525. This conference will teach you how to foster hope, cultivate health, and strengthen connections to build healthier, safer, and more positive communities for all. The 2024 Montana Summer Institute — The Montana Institute 

CADCA 23rd Annual Mid-Year Training Institute - July 14-18, 2024, Chicago, IL

The Mid-Year Training Institute (MYTI) offers in-depth, interactive training sessions geared specifically for community coalition leaders and staff. MYTI also includes two levels of training for the National Youth Leadership Initiative activities (i.e., Key Essentials and Advanced). From fundamentals of coalition building and strategic planning to evaluation and research, you will walk away motivated and inspired. Register for the MYTI here. 

National Prevention Network Conference - August 13-15, 2024, Phoenix, AZ

The purpose of the NPN Conference is to highlight the latest research in the substance use prevention field. It provides a forum for prevention professionals, coalition leaders, researchers, and federal partners to share research, best practices and promising evaluation results for the purpose of integrating research into prevention practice. 2024 Rural Network ConferenceRural Prevention Conference - September 25-26, 2024, Yakima, WA

The Rural Network, a group of volunteers and leaders across Washington state who work towards building resiliency and preventing youth substance misuse in rural communities, are hosting their first annual Rural Prevention Conference. By the end of this two day event, participants will have:

  • Connected with prevention peers across rural Washington
  • Strategized around rural network action plan and advancing prevention efforts in rural Washington
  • Learned latest science, data analysis, and equity initiatives in the substance misuse prevention field

The conference is $85 per person. Please contact Prevent Coalition if you are in need of a conference fee scholarship in order to attend. Certificates of attendance can be provided upon request to [email protected].
